Physics of the Interstellar Medium (ISM)
I’m tutoring the master course Physics of the Interstellar Medium (ISM). Here you will find all the necessary information about this course.
Lecture and Tutorial/Exercise course will be held online!

Due to the Covid-19 virus we will offer our course online via Zoom. You can find the Zoom ID and Password on e-campus. Please note that you should be able to turn on your microphones.
What you have to do
You will get an sciebo link [see ecampus] where you have to put an „x“ for the exercises you did. Please be aware that there will be a deadline for each week (deadline can be seen in the exel sheet) and that you should be able to show what you calculated. To do so:
- take a photo of your written down exercises & load it on your desktop. During the Zoom meeting you should be then able to share your screen and explain what you did.
You will also get three papers you should read and be able to tell me:
– 3 things you learned
– 3 things you did not understand
The weekly summary (text with gaps) should give you an overview about the topics in the lecture. You should try to fill it out before the exercise class. It will not be graded.
We will fill it out together (Participation is encourages and you will for sure have benefits at the end)
How will this course be graded?
The grade will be consits of the amount of points you get on your Homework and participating in the course. Each exercise has a fixed number of points. I will chose a student for each exercise who will show his/her solution via screensharing.
Important: In the end of this course you will need 70% of the exercise points for the addmission to the final exam
There are three ways of evaluation of each exercise sheet:
1) The problem was solved correctly;
alternative, logical approach, but wrong result; ==> All points are granded
2) Correct Ansatz but leading to wrong result; Problem was worked on but entirly wrong ==> Only the points of shown exercise are substracted
3)Problem was obviouly not worked on at all, no written record ==> All points of the exercise sheet are substracted – no points given
The schedule of one class
- Attendance check
- Any questions regarding new exercise sheet (for the following week – uploaded on Tue)
- I pick students to present their exercise on basis what the marked in the checklist (exercise sheet of this week – uploaded previouse week on Tue)
- Questions/Discussion
- Weekly Summary: fill out the gaps together
- Room for additional topic [let me know in advance]
„I can not participate in a tutorial„
In case you cannot participate in a tutorial, please let me know in advance and present an “Attest” from a doctor if you were sick, then the homework will not be counted. In other cases, you may twice hand in the homework in writing 24h before the tutorial at latest via email to the me.
